Nite Ize Clip Strip

Summer 2021

Nite Ize was looking for a variation on the “clip strip,” a common mass-produced product hook that hangs off of shelves for additional space in retail stores. While interning at Concept Designs, I created a custom clip strip that fits several common hook types, interlocks to create various length options, and is recognizable according to Nite Ize’s brand.

While I researched retail storage methods, especially those used to display small hanging products, several priorities emerged: minimizing cost and material, accomodating product/shelf lengths, and packability. Part of the client’s motivation for reinventing the wheel was to create a strong brand association—this clip strip would be bespoke. I also spent a long time diving into plastic fastener designs to optimize the locking mechanism between units; a fraction of my sketches are shown below.

I tested the strip’s function and dimensions by laser-cutting prototypes out of wood and plastic. My final prototype was an assembly of multiple laser-cut layers.
